Does the thought of not storing media in your genealogy software database make you anxious?
I recently spoke to the Memphis & Mid-South Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society about using RootsMagic—with a focus on beginners. Instead of overwhelming them with everything the software can do, I shared key strategies to simplify their experience.
One key takeaway? I don’t store images and documents in RootsMagic. And here’s why:
1. RootsMagic Excels in Organizing Research
RootsMagic is fantastic for structuring genealogy data, but it lacks the robust features needed for optimal media organization. With my experience in information sciences and knowledge management, I enjoy sharing with others better tools that offer greater flexibility and long-term usability.
2. Your Family Needs a Better Way to Engage
Your relatives won’t likely open a genealogy software program to explore their history—especially if you’re no longer around to explain it. Even using an online tree, like those offered at Ancestry, has limitations. A more engaging approach? Telling their stories, supported by images and documents in a format they’ll actually use and enjoy.
That said, I love RootsMagic! It’s the only desktop genealogy software I recommend.
There is, however, one exception I make for media. Profile photos! A simple picture adds personality without the drawbacks mentioned above.
In particular, I am enjoying using these image labels from Black Pearls of Genealogy when I don’t have an actual photo of the person.
In my next post, I’ll share how I do organize my media for maximum accessibility and impact.

Thanks for sharing the benefits of Roots Magic and reasons you don’t store images there. You’ve made it clear that we must abandon the idea that any one tool can meet all our needs for creating and preserving our many projects.
